Breeders Paul and Minnie have had a long and illustrious history with Chow Chows. They founded their Mi-Pao Kennels in 1957. It still consists of some 20 Chows and is the oldest active Chow kennel in Canada. The name Mi Pao is derived from the combinations of Minnie and Paul Odenkirchen’s names (Mi PaO), however in Chinese “Mi” translates to “beautiful”, and “Pao” translates to “value”, which are some of the values the kennels stands behind.
Paul is a respected member of the Canadian Dog Judges Association (CDJA) being a licensed All-Breed judge and has lent his expertise to many dog shows all over the world since 1979 – Canada, USA, England, Germany, Norway, Italy, Russia, Australia, Argentina, Hong Kong, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia and Brazil. After a long and prestigious judging career, Paul is now a judge emeritus. They never kept track of the number of champions they owner-handled (over 100) or their group or BPIS (Best Puppy in Show) wins. Paul has handled 12 of their dogs to one or more Best in Show wins. In this way, Mi Pao kennels would continue to breed the top quality chow chows that they have for the past 60+ years.
The dynamic and dedicated partnership of MInnie and Paul Odenkirchen work tirelessly, even in their retirement, to breed champions, and educate committed chow chow fanciers on the qualities of this magnificent breed.
